"The death of a loved one is never easy, but each person we encountered at Victoria Hospice eased our way with their care and attention, not only to my mother but to my sister and me as well. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and every request was met with a smile and a sense of understanding and compassion. I now know where angels go before they die - they work and volunteer at Victoria Hospice." Victoria Hospice has been providing physical, emotional and spiritual care to patients and their families in Victoria, British Columbia since 1980. This care is called palliative or comfort care, and includes expert physical care as well as counselling, spiritual care and bereavement services. Hospice palliative care is offered in patients’ homes, on our 17-bed in-patient unit, and as specific medical consultation to patients in other health care facilities. Over 400 trained volunteers provide companionship and support, both on our in-patient unit as well as in the community. Our
beautifully refurbished Richmond Pavilion in-patient
unit is as home-like as possible and includes a lounge with a television,
DVD
and stereo equipment, childrens toys and games, a well-stocked kitchen,
a quiet/meditation room, solarium, an enclosed smoking area for patients,
and a beautiful rooftop garden. Visiting hours are unrestricted. Children
and
pets are invited to visit, too. Most of our patient rooms are private
rooms and feature sofa beds where visiting family members can stay overnight
if they wish; three patient rooms are semi-private rooms and do not have
sofa beds.
